Driver reaches 130 mph while fleeing from police; burglar breaks into storage units: Brook Park police blotter

Fleeing & eluding: Interstate 480

An unidentified driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee led police on a high-speed chase at about 2 p.m. July 23.

Police saw the Jeep traveling southbound on West 130th at Brookpark Road. The Jeep’s windows were darkly tinted, perhaps illegally, so police began following the vehicle.

The Jeep turned westbound onto Brookpark. After stopping at a red light, the Jeep started speeding, then ran a red light as it entered Interstate 480 eastbound. Police activated their overhead lights and siren and pursued the vehicle.

The Jeep reached speeds in excess of 130 mph. The driver exited 480 at Ridge Road and turned northbound on Ridge, eastbound onto Memphis Avenue and northbound onto Fulton Parkway. Police lost sight of the Jeep on Fulton at Denison Avenue in Cleveland.

Police obtained a partial license-plate number during the chase. License-plate-detecting security cameras recorded the Jeep on video. Using that video, police traced the plate to a 31-year-old Cleveland man.

Police tried locating the man but were unable to do so at the time of the report.

Breaking & entering, theft, West 130th Street

An unidentified male cut the locks off five storage units in Life Storage, 4976 West 130th, and stole several items from those units.

The theft was reported at about 10:30 a.m. July 15. It theft occurred between 8-10:30 a.m. that day.

The thefts were recorded on security video. A chain-link fence around the business was cut to gain entry. Police found a set of bolt cutters on the floor near one of the storage units.

Among the items stolen were two video game controllers, an electric drill, drill bits, 55-inch and 65-inch televisions, sneakers, dolls, a mailbox, headphones and an electric toothbrush set.

Operating a vehicle under the influence: Brookpark Road

A Brook Park man, 24, was arrested at about 2:30 a.m. July 26 for driving drunk near Park Place Suites, 14011 Brookpark.

Police pulled over the man’s car because he drove his Chevrolet Traverse through a red light on Brookpark at West 139th Street.

The man admitted having three beers. He smelled like alcohol and his eyes were bloodshot and glassy. The man failed field sobriety tests.

Operating a vehicle under the influence: West 130th Street

A Broadview Heights woman, 21, was arrested at about 9:30 p.m. July 23 after she pulled her Volkswagen Passat into a driveway on West 130th, parked and passed out in the car with the engine still running.

When police arrived, the woman was buckled into the driver’s seat and slumped over. Police knocked on the window but the woman didn’t respond, so they called paramedics.

Police opened the unlocked driver’s-side door and saw that the woman was breathing. They shook her, and the woman lifted her head and opened her eyes.

Police smelled alcohol. The woman admitted drinking earlier in a Cleveland bar. She was taken to The MetroHealth System in Parma.

Criminal damaging & endangering: Gilmere Drive

Two unidentified juveniles approached a Gilmere home, kicked the front door and ran away at about 8:30 p.m. July 22. The door was slightly damaged.

Larceny: Brook Park Road

A neon yellow Marlin 6 Trek mountain bicycle was reported stolen at about 7 p.m. July 23 from the front of Park Place Suites, 14011 Brookpark.

The victim said he had chained his bike to a tree. Someone cut the chain on the lock.

Public property damaged: Sylvia Drive

Someone damaged a bathroom in a park on Sylvia Drive.

In a men’s stall, police found the toilet and the stall door on the ground.
